Guide for Graduate Students — Title Page

Dr. James M. Blythe, the department’s Graduate Coordinator until Fall 2014, wrote this current version of the “Guide for Graduate Students.” Dr. Daniel Unowsky is now the Graduate Coordinator. For any matters relating to the graduate program in History, send an e-mail to, telephone 901.678.3385, send a fax to 901.678.2720, or visit his office in 131 Mitchell.

To check on routine matters, such as whether materials you sent to the department have arrived, to ask about forms, deadlines, and other such questions, get in touch with the graduate secretary, Karen Jackett,, 901.678.1366.

There is also a version of this guide which combines all the sections in a single large document. For a compact summary of the steps to graduation and a link to the necessary forms, see the timetables for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs.

This guide details the requirements and procedures that became effective with the Fall 2013 semester. If you began before Fall 2013, you are entitled to follow the requirements in force at that time. Speak to the Graduate Coordinator if you want to follow the new requirements instead.
