Message from the Dean

Dean Rick Sweigard has been “on the job” for a little more than 60 days.  In that short amount of time, he has positioned his leadership team to take advantage of the changes at the University of Memphis by exploring opportunities and examining challenges facing the College. He is encouraging his team to imagine the possibilities, put pen to paper, and develop a five-year strategic plan. In this month’s message, Dean Sweigard highlights a few key objectives.  Watch the Dean’s message…

GEE

Opening Doors and Minds to STEM Education

Each June, the University of Memphis hosts two fast‐paced interactive summer programs that engage, educate, and excite Memphis area high school and middle school students with a number of activities designed to motivate and challenge participants to explore engineering. In June 2013, the Herff College of Engineering expanded the scope to include 23 high school teachers from area public, private and parochial schools! The college funded a teacher workshop that was held simultaneously with the Girls Experiencing Engineering (GEE) High School Program. Rock

Herff College ROCKS!

It is official – the Herff College of Engineering ROCKS! Thanks to this one-of-a-kind custom University of Memphis themed guitar from the Memphis based Gibson Guitar Factory.  What’s the story behind this wonderful gift? The factory makes replicas of vintage guitars and wanted to take their reproductions to a new level of accuracy. Robert Hewitt, Associate Professor in Engineering Technology, worked with the crew to use the University’s equipment to get precise measurements of some rare guitars. As a thank you, Gibson gifted the College this unique guitar. Come take a look the next time you are in the Herff College Administration building. We plan to display the guitar in the Dean's office area.
