Welcome to the Fall 2009 Fogelman Flash e-Newsletter

Rajiv Grover

Greetings from the Fogelman College! This has proven to be a great fall semester at the Fogelman College as we launched the new Customer-Driven MBA (CDMBA) program which had been in the planning and development stages for two years. The CDMBA has attracted an inaugural cohort of very high achieving students to its three initial tracks: BioMedical, Services Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. Students in the CDMBA program are sponsored by companies that pay their tuition and a stipend during the two-year program. The students intern with their sponsoring companies for ten hours per week during the school year and full-time during the intervening summer. Each student receives an employment offer from their sponsoring company at the time of admittance to the CDMBA program. Upon successful completion of the CDMBA program the student joins the sponsoring company with a commitment to work for at least two years. The CDMBA students take their core MBA courses together with the students in the International MBA (IMBA) program. This is by design so that the CDMBA students get more international exposure in their coursework. See another article in this newsletter for admission requirements for these programs.

Fogelman College Faculty Publications

Brian Janz

Prof. Brian Janz Publishes Article on Journal Self-Referencing

The practice of editorial "self-referencing" – journal editors requiring that authors include in their papers a specific number of citations from the journal in which they seek to publish – has recently garnered significant interest within the IS academic community.  A recent survey of AISWorld suggests that the vast majority of respondents find this practice inappropriate and unethical. Rather than dismissing this behavior as patently unethical, this paper seeks to better understand the possible motivations for this editorial behavior. The notion of the ethical dilemma is introduced, as well as a framework to assist in analyzing them. Ultimately, the analysis suggests that while editors may feel they have worthwhile reasons for requiring self-references, the potential long term risks to the journal, the academy, and the body of knowledge outweigh those reasons.

The journal reference is:  Janz, B.D. Journal Self-Citation XIV: Right Versus Right – Gaining Clarity into the Ethical Dilemma of Editorial Self-Referencing. Communications of the AIS, Volume 25, Article 14, pp. 115-120, July 2009

Fogelman College Faculty Presentations

Jerry Turner

Prof. Jerry Turner Presents to the AICPA Auditing Standards Board

Prof. Jerry Turner and two co-authors recently presented results of an international study to the AICPA Auditing Standards Board in New York City. The study, titled “The Unqualified Auditor’s Report: A Study of User Perceptions, Effects on User Decisions and Decision Processes, and Directions for Future Research,” was conducted in the U.S. and Australia and included results of focus groups with both preparers and users of financial statements. Verbal protocol analysis examining how the auditor’s report on financial statements influences the decision processes of professional financial analysts also was included. Study results will be presented to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board this fall. The two Boards commissioned the study as a first phase in examining how the auditor’s report may be made more informative.

Dr. Turner also has joined the Advisory Board of the Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting, a new research journal focusing on accounting fraud and related issues.
