Undergraduate Student Services Office Launches Social Media Platforms
For release: October 2, 2013
Connecting with the FCBE Undergraduate Student Services Office is now easier and more
convenient than ever, thanks to a new social media initiative that includes a Facebook
page and Twitter feed.
Angelica Coleman of the Student Services’ Office said that the initiative provides
students with more possibilities for communication via multiple modalities.
“Social media allows information to flow bilaterally, directly and effectively, which
is how students approach communication today,” she explained. “It gives us the chance
to present upcoming events, important dates and answer questions publicly or privately.”
Today’s students possess shorter attention spans, crave connectedness, require easy
access and desire direct communication with ample visuals. Traditional email alone
cannot provide this heightened level of interaction. However, social media allows
for increased communication across an array of platforms relevant to both current
and future students.
Coleman explained that the new social media accounts will provide richer interaction
and more thorough information than the office’s traditional communication tool, email.
She expects student involvement and interaction to grow over the next few semesters
as the office focuses efforts on promoting awareness of these new modes of communication.
The Undergraduate Student Services Office launched both accounts on August 5, 2013,
a few short months after the initiative’s proposal. The office’s Twitter feed is currently
used to provide quick updates or links to web pages with detailed information. The
Facebook page is used to announce upcoming events and save-the-dates, answer frequently
asked questions and discuss upcoming changes to the Office that are expected to benefit
