FCBE Sponsors Memphis Business Journal Small Business Awards Ceremony
For release: May 24, 2013
The 33rd Annual Memphis Business Journal’s Small Business Awards ceremony was hosted
last evening on May 23, 2013 at the Kemmons Wilson’s Holiday Inn on the University
of Memphis campus. The Fogelman College of Business and Economics was a proud sponsor
of this event, which is designed to celebrate and applaud the professional successes
of small business owners and their companies throughout the Memphis community.
Randy Karchmer, a former Morgan Keegan & Co. Inc. executive now managing partner of
Metronome Partners, was awarded top honors as Executive of the Year.
There were five finalists for Small Business of the Year in each category, which were
designated by company size – 1 to 25 employees, 26 to 60 employees and 61 plus employees.
Obsidian Public Relations, Memphis Invest GP and ATC Fitness Inc. were selected as
the three winners in each category, respectively. The winners were chosen by an independent
panel of judges, including Dr. John Malloy, a FCBE Professor of Accounting.
Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell said a few words to open the event, but the spotlight
of the evening was Readus Smith.
Smith is the CEO of Nashville-based Promise2Care Pharmacy, which specializes in home
delivery of pharmaceuticals, diabetic supplies and other health care products. He
inspired the crowd with his life story in which he overcame incredible odds to become
the success that he is today. He credited his first trip to the MBJ Small Business
Awards nearly 30 years ago for changing his life.
