Dr. Rajiv Grover, dean of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics at the University
of Memphis, has announced a major gift from local real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist
Avron Fogelman. The $1.25 million gift will create the Avron B. Fogelman Center for
Professional Career Development. The Center will encompass extracurricular activities
and programs, including student recruitment, mentoring, internships, career counseling,
job placement, business ethics, professionalism training, physical wellness, corporate
field trips, career fair days, and personal and interpersonal skill enhancement.
Among these programs are several that have already been launched to help develop students
outside the classroom under the Fogelman Promise banner, including Professionalism
First!, the 4Cs Program, Know Good - Do Good - Thrive, Fogelman Fit, Fogelman Feeds, Fogelman Promise Day, Business Etiquette
Dining and Toastmasters.
The creation of the new Center for Professional Career Development will ensure the
sustainability of these programs and allow them to have an even greater impact on
the development of students in the Fogelman College.
The gift from Avron Fogelman is the latest in a long line of support that the Fogelman
family has given the College of Business & Economics that bears its name. In May,
the family of Bobby Fogelman, Avron’s brother, gave $2 million to support the College’s
new developments in the promotion of sustainable real estate.
“The Fogelman Promise is a unique program that is receiving considerable traction
in the community and College,” said Grover. “Our recent AACSB accreditation review
expressly singled out this program as being very relevant and noteworthy and as being
one of the key factors that resulted in a very positive review. This gift, though
not covering all the needs of the Center, will allow us to jump-start these crucial
activities. I know all the students join me in thanking Avron from the bottom of our hearts.”
