Dean Grover's Message
In the past few issues of the Fogelman Flash and Fogelman Focus, I have discussed development and execution of long-term strategies, the benefits of cooperation over competition, the value of meritocracy and the merits of empowerment.   In this issue of the Fogelman Flash, I would like to talk about the importance of proactivity, a trait that differentiates the average from the excellent. When proactivity is embraced, organizations and individuals can to move to the next level in their industries and careers.

FCBE Hosts Inaugural Investors in Excellence Induction Ceremony
On September 30, 2013 several of the biggest names in business visited the Fogelman College to attend a ceremony that would formally honor and induct them into the inaugural group of FCBE’s Investors in Excellence.

The Investors in Excellence are an elite group of Fogelman College supporters that have exhibited tremendous influence on increasing the business school’s enrollment, implementing dynamic new programs, expanding financial support to students and faculty, and building mutually beneficial connections between the University and the Memphis community.

Five FCBE Alumni Honored as Super Women in Business
Memphis Business Journal recently announced its list of this year’s top 25 “Super Women in Business” awards. This program honors women in different industries who have achieved significant success through leadership in business and community contribution. Five of the award winners are Fogelman College MBA graduates.

FCBE Faculty Receive George Johnson Fellowship Awards
Five Fogelman College faculty members were the inaugural recipients of the George Johnson Fellowship Awards program at the fall semester’s faculty and staff meeting. These fellowships, supported by FCBE alumnus George Johnson, can be awarded to a maximum of five faculty members each year for their significant contributions in the areas of research, teaching or service.

U.S. News Ranks Online MBA Top 10 for Veterans
After evaluating online MBA programs from around the country, www.businessmba.org rated the U of M’s Fogelman College of Business and Economics’ online MBA as a “Best Value” (16th out of the top 25 in the country) and www.geteducated.com called the program a “Best Buy” (24th on its list of top programs).

FCBE Students Inspiring Others through Peer Power
University of Memphis Students Serve as Mentors at Inner-city Schools

Fogelman College of Business and Economics (FCBE) students are actively giving back to their communities by mentoring lower-income, local elementary, middle and high school students. In addition to focusing on their own college-level academic development, FCBE students are working with Peer Power, a non-profit organization that hires and trains high-performing students to tutor and mentor their peers, encourage active learning, value education and be personally accountable for their futures.

MIS Department Receives Top 50 Recognition
As part of the Association of Information Systems (AIS) sponsored IS Job Index, the best 50 MIS programs nationally were recently identified. The University of Memphis MIS Department was listed amongst these top-tier programs. The schools considered for the prestigious honor were required to meet certain criteria including, having a substantial Information Systems-centric major at the undergraduate or graduate level and being located in the United States.

Dr. Dhaliwal Presents Keynote Address in Israel
This Fall 2012, the Executive MBA Program graduated its first Executive MBA December Class under the new, 17-month format.  The 17 graduates represented various industries and companies, both domestic and international.

Eight FCBE Students Awarded Presidential Tuition Service Scholarships
Eight Fogelman College graduate students were recently awarded the prestigious, and highly competitive, Presidential Tuition Service Scholarships. This scholarship is designed to cover the costs of tuition and fees for three or six hours of coursework per semester. In return, the students commit to a service component of 75 hours for six hours of tuition, or 37.5 hours for 3 hours of tuition.

American Academy of Nursing Living Legend, Clara M. L. Adams-Ender (B.G. US Army, ret.), to Visit University of Memphis
The Fogelman College of Business in Economics (FCBE), in partnership with the Loewenberg School of Nursing (LSON), was honored to host the American Academy of Nursing “Living Legend” former Brigadier General and U.S. Army Nurse, Dr. Clara L. Adams-Ender (“General Clara”) at the University of Memphis in late October. One of the Army Medical Corps most honored Leaders, General Clara’s visit, included two larger-group discussions regarding leadership in nursing and healthcare, several smaller meetings with faculty, leaders, alumni and students from both nursing and business schools, and a visit to the VA Hospital to meet with healthcare professionals and veterans.

Dr. Richard Evans

Richard Evans Named University Faculty Senate President
Richard Evans was named University of Memphis Faculty Senate President and Vice Chair of the Faculty in April 2013. Previously he held the position of President Elect of the Faculty Senate, serving as the University of Memphis representative to the Tennessee Board of Regents Faculty Sub-Council. The three year commitment that is associated with the election ends with a year’s service on the Faculty Senate’s Executive Committee as Immediate Past President.

Five Fogelman College supply chain management undergraduate students were recently recruited and hired by International Paper (IP). International Paper is one of the leading companies in the paper and packaging industry with manufacturing operations in North American, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Richard W. Smith, Managing Director of FedEx, Visits FCBE
This past April, the full-time MBA program was pleased to host Richard W. Smith as the guest speaker for their weekly Lunch & Learn gathering. This was the final Lunch & Learn session for the semester.  The Lunch & Learn series invites notable business, government and NGO leaders to speak to Fogelman College’s full-time MBA students (which include both Customer Driven and International MBA programs) about issues important to the given speaker's organization and industry.

P.K. Jain Meets with Nobel Prize Laureate
P.K. Jain, FCBE Professor of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate recently met with Nobel Prize Laureate, Robert Engle, to discuss high frequency trading at the world’s leading conference in market microstructure. This conference alternated between New York University and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Boston.

Dr. Charlene P. Spiceland

Charlene Spiceland Appointed to the TN State Board of Accountancy
Governor Bill Haslam recently appointed Dr. Charlene P. Spiceland, FCBE Professor in the School of Accountancy, to the Tennessee State Board of Accountancy. The mission of the Board is to protect the public interest by ensuring that persons professing special competence in accountancy or those offering assurance regarding financial statement presentation have demonstrated their qualifications to do so. Dr. Spiceland was appointed to serve a three-year term through June 30, 2016.

Dr. Marla Stafford

Dr. Tom Stafford & Dr. Marla Stafford’s Article in Decision Sciences Recognized among Top 10 Downloads
Dr. Tom Stafford, an associate professor of the MIS Department, and Dr. Marla Stafford, chairman of the Marketing & Supply Chain Management Department, published “Determining Uses and Gratifications for the Internet,” in Decision Sciences (volume 35, issue 2) in 2004. Since then, this article has been recognized by Wiley-Blackwell publishers as the 7th most downloaded article in the Decision Sciences Journal. This article, produced with cooperation from America Online as part of Stafford’s MIS dissertation, demonstrated user motivation for commercial Internet Service Provider subscriptions and is a widely cited example of Internet-motivation research.

FCBE Senior Applies Concepts Learned in Class to International Internship
Fogelman College student, Decorian Williams, gained valuable market insight through a unique summer 2013 internship opportunity with Shanghai Real Estate in Shanghai, China. Williams, a Finance major concentrating in Real Estate, was primarily responsible for gathering information that would enable Shanghai Real Estate to create a financial and market analysis of the company’s current investment market. During the course of his internship, Williams learned how to effectively apply business concepts and theories learned in the academic setting to real-world decision-making in an international setting. He also credits the internship with helping him develop and improve his skills in communication, technology, quantitative reasoning and teamwork.
