Richard Evans Named University Faculty Senate President
Richard Evans was named University of Memphis Faculty Senate President and Vice Chair of the Faculty in April 2013. Previously he held the position of President Elect of the Faculty Senate, serving as the University of Memphis representative to the Tennessee Board of Regents Faculty Sub-Council. The three year commitment that is associated with the election ends with a year’s service on the Faculty Senate’s Executive Committee as Immediate Past President.

According to the Faculty Constitution at the University of Memphis, the Faculty Senate’s purpose is to serve as the primary vehicle of faculty participation in the establishment of University policies. The elected representatives of 44 academic units on campus evaluate and make recommendations on academic matters, criteria for promotion and tenure, faculty appointment and retention, and a wide variety of academic support functions, such as the library and information technology. The Constitution of the Faculty gives the Faculty Senate the right to vote approval of changes in graduation requirements and the general education curriculum, as well as changes in the Faculty Handbook. It is charged with the responsibility to maintain academic freedom and responsibility at the University of Memphis. It is also a forum for the formulation of faculty opinion, through public speech and surveys of the faculty, including an annual evaluation of the president, provost and deans.

Richard Evans is Professor of Real Estate and Economics, with recent research interests in forecasting commercial real estate cycles. Since 1999, he has been supported by a forecasting grant from the City of Memphis Department of Finance that is centered in the college’s Sparks Bureau of Business and Economic Research.
