The University of Memphis completed its three-year reaffirmation process recently when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) on-site team visited campus. At the team's exit interview, they indicated the U of M was in full compliance with all SACS standards. In addition, the committee commended the University for a strong, well-based Quality Enhancement Plan.
The Quality Enhancement Plan focuses on development of learning communities, which are small groupings of students who take classes together during their first semester of college. The plan's goal is to establish a new environment for entering freshmen that provides a socially and academically engaging experience to extend learning opportunities and lead to enhanced student success. The U of M learning communities program is modeled after the highly successful and award-winning program at Georgia State University.
The committee's report will be forwarded to the full commission for reaffirmation at the December 2005 SACS meeting.
As we near the close of our first major Alumni Association membership drive in recent years, we would like to sincerely thank our members and our life members for making this year truly remarkable for the University of Memphis. Here are just some of the new initiatives the Association has seen through this year:
- Established Alumni Association bylaws and created a member handbook
- Released a new member kit for first-time members
- Held barn parties prior to each home football game and Tiger Treks to each away football game
- Created five new clubs and chapters
- Launched Career Encounters mentoring program with Career Services
- Revamped the member benefits package
In addition, our clubs and chapters are doing wonderful things - funding scholarships, establishing mentoring programs and holding networking events. There's still time to join this year, so if you've been thinking about becoming a member of the Alumni Association, JOIN TODAY at http://www.memphis.edu/alumni_online. Wait and see what we've got planned for 2005-06!
Students from the University of Memphis' Loewenberg School of Nursing scored a 100 percent passage rate on the December 2004 NCLEX (National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination).
All nurses in the United States and its territories must take the NCLEX, which demonstrates competence to practice nursing at the entry level. Passing the NCLEX is one of the requirements for attaining a nursing license.
