Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals, Biological Agents, and Ionizing Radiation
During the course of the semester, some classes and laboratories may use hazardous
chemicals, biological agents, radioactive materials, or radiation producing equipment.
Prior to enrolling for classes each semester, The University of Memphis recommends
that students with health concerns or conditions seek private medical advice about
the appropriateness for them to enroll in classes and laboratories using hazardous
chemicals, biological agents, or ionizing radiation. The state of the art at this
time is not sufficient to provide complete information about all possible side effects
and health hazards, known and unknown, which could develop from the exposure to and
use of such hazardous chemicals, biological agents, and ionizing radiation.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for hazardous chemicals are available 24 hours per day via
any web capable device on the University network (see Safety Data Sheet link at right).
SDSs, information about biological agents and ionizing radiation, and related information
are available for review during regular University business hours in the Environmental
Health and Safety Office, 216 Browning Hall. For information about hazards associated
with a particular course, please contact the faculty member listed as the instructor
of record in the schedule of courses.
