Internal Search

The University of Memphis invites internal applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Responsibilities:

The Dean is the senior administrative officer of the College and reports directly to the Provost. The Dean’s responsibilities include:

  • providing leadership and advocacy for the College’s programs and faculty within the University community and the community at large
  • overseeing the development, assessment and revision of academic programs
  • enhancing the College’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally, through the support of scholarship activities
  • implementing diversity initiatives
  • effectively managing the College by working with department chairpersons
  • budgeting and resource allocation
  • supporting outreach activities that will link the University and the community
  • securing external resources to support the College’s mission

Qualifications:

In addition to an earned doctorate in one of the fields in the College, candidates must demonstrate

  • experience in effective decision-making and problem-solving ability at the level of department chair or higher, or equivalent administrative experience
  • a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching and service that is consistent with a senior-level appointment in the College
  • the ability to manage budgets and resources
  • a commitment to promoting diversity among the faculty, staff and student populations
  • effectiveness in interpersonal relations, including the ability to initiate and sustain interdisciplinary collaborations
  • a respect for a variety of cultural, global and community perspectives
  • a commitment to building community relations and securing external funds
