Students with prior military service, or who took Junior ROTC, may be given credit
for Basic Course completion and would not be required to attend the Leader's Training
Course. Leader's Training course is attended during the summer between your sophomore and
junior years of college for five weeks at Fort Knox (Louisville), Kentucky. The purpose
of the Leader's Training Course is to provide instruction in the basic leadership
and technical skills that will prepare you for your junior and senior years of ROTC.
During this camp you have the opportunity to compete for available two year or Guaranteed
Reserve Forces scholarships. All travel expenses are paid and you are paid while attending
camp.
Leader’s Training Course is divided into four phases. The first stage is the Soldier First Phase. It is a basic introduction to the Army and it teaches cadets the skills and knowledge
necessary to participate in the next three phases. Cadets have described this phase as “teaching them what right looks like.” Specifically, cadets are taught military customs and courtesies such as saluting,
how to ear the uniform, and how to march.
The second phase of LTC is the Warrior Leader Phase. This part of the cadet’s training covers adventure training which builds both self
confidence and espirit-de-corps. Focus is on individual skills as a precursor and builds up to learning group dynamics. Cadets learn basic military skills in order to function as a small group member.
The third phase is the Bold Leader Phase. Cadets are exposed to squad level operations where their leadership is assessed in
a field environment. The Field Training Exercise is intentionally tough and introduces the element of
stress. Throughout the exercise, cadets encounter physical and mental obstacles that challenge
them as a person, cadet and leader.
The Final Stage of LTC is the Future Leader Phase. This portion of the cadet’s training introduces them to the social aspect of the
Army. Final Briefings are conducted as well as a family day in conjunction with a cadet
run graduation ceremony.
