Roy Lichtenstein is perhaps the most pop of the pop artists. His comic strip-inspired
images celebrate, criticize and spoof every aspect of American life from soap operas
and superheroes to the loftiest realms of high art. In 1964 when this piece was produced,
his work was attracting considerable attention, much of it hostile, for its large
scale and precisely painted adaptations of printed mass media ads and publications.
"Sandwich and Soda" relates to a series focused on simple objects as they might be
represented for in-store advertising.
