Louise Nevelson was an original in every aspect of her life and career. Draped in
the black ethnic clothing of her native land and theatrical make up, Nevelson’s persona
was as mysterious and arresting as her work. Best known as a sculptor, Louise Nevelson
might equally be considered a painter and printmaker, and in all of these media, as
well as in her life, she made her own path. Cast off fragments of wood from furniture,
architectural details, packing cases, construction sites formed the inventory of materials
she assembled into monumental works unified by a single color, usually black. Generally
meant to be seen from one side, the sculptures migrated easily to paintings in relief
and into photographic prints like the one in the Artists & Writers Protest portfolio.
