Young Alumni
Current University of Memphis graduate or doctorate students that attended the U of M as an undergraduate are eligible to apply for the Young Alumni Legacy Scholarship. The deadline is Friday, May 17. Click here to learn more and download an application.

UMAR will hosts its annual Spring Picnic on Sunday, May 19, at 3 pm at the home of Agnes Stark. There will be a wine tasting, horseshoes, and a drawing of donated items benefiting the UMAR Scholarship Fund. Tickets for the drawing will be 5/$5 or 12/$10. Don't forget to bring a folding chair. Main dishes and beverages will be provided by UMAR, so guests are asked to bring a dish according to last name: A-E bring fruit, cheese or dessert / F-L bring bread / M & N bring salads and / O-Z bring a vegetable or side dish. Enjoy breakfast with the UMAR Book Club on Tuesday, May 28 at 11 am at Brother Juniper's before discussing this month's literary work, Men of Fire: Grant, Forrest and the Campaign That Decided the Civil War by Jack Hurst. The book club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every other month.

On the first Tuesday of each month, the UMAR Breakfast Bunch gathers at 9 am for a casual breakfast at the Perkins Restaurant & Bakery located in the Eastgate Shopping Center, at 5112 Park Avenue. The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 4. All UMAR members and U of M retirees are welcome. The cost of breakfast is on your own.

Friday, June 14, at 10 am at the Collierville Library, UMAR will listen to a riverboat captain speak about ‘life on the river.’ This will be followed by lunch at Frank Grisanti’s (1022 South Shady Grove Rd., Memphis, TN). A journey to Morton Museum ( will follow lunch for a look at the latest exhibits. Please contact Alumni Coordinator Brandon Hoyer at or 901/678-1333 to RSVP by June 11.

Tuesday, June 25, the UMAR Garden Club will meet to speak about summer plants, followed by lunch at a location TBD. The Garden Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every other month. For more information about the Garden Club or to RSVP, please contact Sheryl Maxwell at or 901/755-2131 by June 24.

Hispanic Alumni Council
The Hispanic Alumni Council will hold a general board meeting open to all alumni on Wednesday, May 29, at 5:30 pm in the Alumni Center on 635 Normal Street.  Topics to be discussed will include University of Memphis Soccer watch parties, upcoming mixers and scholarship funding.  For more information about the HAC or how to get involved, please contact Alumni Coordinator, Jaclyn Rodriguez,  at or 901/678-3119.

Welcome new Law School Dean, Peter Letsou! For all alumni attending the Tennessee Bar Association’s Annual Convention, the Tennessee Judicial Conference or the Tennessee Association for Justice, take the time on Thursday, June 13 from 7-8 am to meet Dean Letsou. Save the Date: On Saturday, August 3, the Law Alumni Chapter will hold its Pillars of Excellence Dinner at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.  This year the Chapter will honor six Pillars of Excellence from within the Memphis law community including: Marvin Ballin (JD ’63), Marion “Boots” Boyd, R. Grattan Brown, Jr., Hon. David R. Farmer (BBA ’63, JD ’66), Hon. Ronald L. Gilman, and Hon. Charles O. McPherson (BS ’64, JD ’65). The Belz Family will be honored as Friends of the Law School.
