Students Awarded External Scholarships for Spring 2014
Congratulations to Alex Gailbraith, Lisa Gibson, and Bradley Starnes for winning the
prestigious Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad! The Gilman Scholarship provides awards for undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding
to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Alex Galbraith of Brownsville, Tenn., is majoring in Asian Studies and International Trade and business
economics. He will study at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in Shanghai,
China. The son of LeAnn Beck and Kurt Galbraith, his career goal is to serve as the
U.S. ambassador to China. Alex has also won the Alliance Scholarship for Global Education
Lisa Gibson, a biomedical engineering major from Memphis, will study electrical engineering at
Hochschule Ulm in Ulm, Germany. She is the daughter of Roger Gibson and Susan Gibson.
Her career goal is to do research and development in the industry as a biomedical
engineer. Gibson plans to specialize in bioelectricity by combining electrical engineering
with biomedical engineering.
Bradley Starnes, a French major from Memphis, will attend the Catholic University of Lille in Lille,
France. He is the son of Jimmy and Margaret Starnes. His career aim is to teach French.
Congratulations to Dylan Turner for winning the CEA Global Education Scholarship!
Dylan Turner, a psychology major from Munford, TN will attend the CEA program in Alicante, Spain.
He is the son of Glenn and Stacey Turner. He plans to eventually become an orthopedic
Student Awarded Bridging Scholarship
Congratulations to Rachel Degroff for winning the Bridging Scholarship for Study in
Japan! A senior, Rachel has spent the Spring and Fall 2013 Semesters studying Japanese language
and Culture at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo, Japan.
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad
programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through
donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award
about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses
they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Congratulations to Ayesha Ghani, John Burrell, and John Aaron Whitaker for winning
the prestigious Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad!
Ayesha Ghani, a senior majoring Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Dietetics
studied Nutrition in Florence, Italy this past summer.
John Burrell, a senior majoring in Accounting and Foreign Languages with a concentration in Japanese
will be studying business and Japanese language during the 2013 â€“ 2014 Academic Year
at Osaka University of Economics in Osaka, Japan.
John Aaron Whitaker, a junior majoring in International Business and Foreign Languages with a concentration
in Japanese will also be studying business and Japanese language during the 2013 â€“
2014 Academic Year at Osaka University of Economics in Osaka, Japan.
